Hey everyone, it’s Alex Kopacz here, the 2018 Olympic Champion in bobsleigh. I want to share my incredible journey with you and shed light on the coping strategies that helped me overcome adversity and achieve my ultimate goal. It’s been a wild ride, so buckle up and let’s dive into the lessons I’ve learned along the way.

Pushing Through the Pain:

Back in 2016, just before a crucial trip to Calgary, I suffered a devastating injury – a torn adductor. It was a blow to my dreams, but I refused to let it define me. Despite the pain, I pushed through and managed to secure the top spot in team testing. However, the injury worsened, and I had to leave the team for a year. The physical pain and emotional toll were unbearable, but I found the strength to keep going. It taught me that no matter how tough the situation, pushing through the pain is essential in achieving success.

Triumph in the Face of Uncertainty:

The road to the Olympics is filled with uncertainties, and I had my fair share of them. With the Games on the horizon, I feared my injury would prevent me from making the team. But I didn’t let that fear consume me. I focused on what I could control – my determination and work ethic. I channeled my energy into my recovery and training, setting records and winning medals along the way. Triumphing in the face of uncertainty is a powerful reminder that we can shape our own destiny.

The Power of Personal Coaching and Mentorship:

After my injury, I knew I needed a personal coach who could guide me to the next level. So, I took a leap of faith and moved to Germany to work with Olaf Hampel, an experienced coach and mentor. Together, we embarked on a journey of rigorous training, pushing the limits of what I thought was possible. Olaf’s guidance not only improved my athletic abilities but also taught me valuable life lessons about resilience, discipline, and embracing challenges head-on.

Embracing the Support of a Second Family:

During my time in Germany, I was embraced by the Hampel family, who became my second family away from home. Their unwavering support and love made a world of difference. They not only provided a training environment but also nurtured my emotional well-being. The power of a strong support system cannot be underestimated. The Hampels taught me that when you have people who believe in you, anything is possible.

Pushing through pain, triumphing in uncertainty, finding the right mentor, and embracing a supportive community were the coping strategies that fueled my success. I hope my story inspires you to face your own challenges head-on, push your limits, and seek support when needed. Remember, the path to success is rarely easy, but with determination, resilience, and the right mindset, you can overcome any adversity that comes your way.
